Learning to love is hard,

love with the hands wide open, love

with the doors banging on their hinges,

the cupboard unlocked, the wind

roaring and whimpering in the rooms

rustling the sheets and snapping the blinds

that thwack like rubber bands

in an open palm.

Counting Crows

I once read a book, the name of which I have forgotten. In it, a girl from Newfoundland recites a poem when she sees a flock of crows. I memorized it, and still somehow remember it today. Lately it has been in my mind, so I found it.

Counting Crows

One for sadness, two for mirth;
Three for marriage, four for birth;

What would I do…

If I had no fear… and no commitments, I would get into my car and get on the freeway. I would drive across Canada and see all the things I have always wanted to see. I would blast my music and roll the windows down. I would stay in small towns, and camp in forgotten places. I would go where and when I wanted. I would meet people along the way, write postcards and not emails. I would watch the sunrise on the top of a mountain, and swim in a lake in the middle of nowhere. Most of all I would erase all the stress and problems from home. I hope I would find myself.
